On Monday, 17 May 2021, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has launched the first batch of the 2-deoxy-D-glucose or 2-DG drug for the treatment of COVID-19, the Central Defense Minister Rajnath Singh launched this drug. The Central Health Minister Harsh Vardhan was also present at this launch event. In the beginning, DRDO will supply around 10,000 doses to the various hospitals in Delhi. The DCGI (Drug Controller General of India) had approved 2-DG drug developed by DRDO on May 8th for emergency use in moderate to severe cases of Covid-19 in India. This DRDO Anti-Covid Drug 2-DG comes in Powder form and is also taken orally by dissolving it in water. This Anti-Covid Drug 2-DG is developed by the DRDO’s Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), along with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.

In the launch event, Union Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan said” The drug has the potential to become a game-changer in our response against the COVID-19 Pandemic as it reduces dependence on oxygen and has the potential to get absorbed differentially. In the COVID infected cells, it inhibits virus synthesis and energy production for the process.

The first batch of DRDO Anti-Covid Drug 2-DG will be available for only AIIMS, Armed Forces Hospitals, DRDO Hospitals and other places in need. It will be available for all other hospitals from the month of June.

As per a PIB release this drug has been tested in three phases. First phase trials started in April 2020 where it was founded that this drug works against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and inhibits its viral growth. The second phase of trials was conducted in May 2020. The third phase trials were conducted between December 2020 to March 2021 at 27 different COVID hospitals at Delhi, UP, West Bengal, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Some features of DRDO Anti-Covid Drug 2-DG are as follows: -

  • This drug comes in powder form which consumed orally by dissolving it in water.
  • This drug is made up of generic molecules and an analogue of glucose, which means it can be easily produced.
  • This drug directly targets the COVID infected cells and prevents virus growth by stopping viral synthesis and energy production.
  • The 2-DG drug helps faster recovery of the infected patients and reduces the dependency on oxygen.
  • The 2-DG drug also helps to reduce the hospitalized time of COVID patient as the drug has successfully demonstrated RT-PCR negative results in Covid Patients.

How DRDO Anti-Covid Drug 2-DG works?

This 2-DG drug is taken orally with water so it spreads throughout the body like Glucose. It directly reaches the Corona Virus-infected cells and stops the growth of these cell by stopping viral synthesis and destroys the protein’s energy production. These drugs also reduce the infection spread into the lungs which ultimately helps to reduce dependability on oxygen for patients.
