Parijat or Night Jasmine:

Night jasmine is also called parijat or harsingar and has fragrant orange-red twigs with white flowers. There is nothing quite like the soothing and calming scent of night jasmine. This tree, commonly known as Raat ki Rani, blossoms only at night and drops all of its flowers first thing in the morning. Because the flowers lose their brightness during the day, the species is often called a "tree of sorrow;" arbor-tristis, in scientific terms, means "sad tree". Flowers are used to making yellow dye for clothing. Ayurvedic medicines have used every aspect of the tree to treat numerous health issues since ancient times.

What is Parijata/Night Jasmine Called in Different Languages:

Thailand's Kanchanaburi Province and West Bengal state use this flower as their official flower. In Odisha, the flower is called Gangaseuli, and somewhere it is called Jharaa sephali. Throughout West Bengal, it is called Parijat, Shefali, and Siuli. In Bihar, Mathilanchal, and Madhesh it is known as Har-shringaar. Xewalee is the Assamese name, and Sepalika is the Sri Lankan name. It is known as parijatha in Karnataka. The Telugu name is parijatam. In Malayalam, it is known as Pavizhamalli. Similarly, it is called Pavazhamalli in Tamil. It is known as paardak in Konkani. In Marathi, it is called prajakta. Myanmar calls it Seikphaloo.

Parijat and Night Jasmine: The Appearance:

It grows to a height of about 10 meters as an annual bushy tree in the terrestrial environment. Typically, the plant is found on rocky soil in mountain shade, deciduous forests, or at heights of up to 1500 m above sea level with wind or nonseasonal rainfall. In loamy soils and in soils with moderate conditions, this plant grows well. Parijat plants have bark that is dark gray or brown and firm and hard. There are 5 to 10 elongated and 2.5 to 6.3 cm wide leaves on opposite sides, hairy and round, and have few main nerves underside, with petioles averaging 6 cm long. It has an acute or acuminate apex with a full or cherished ovarian margin. A darker green surface lies above a paler green, lightly pubescent lower surface. Flower heads grow on the axils of the leaves, or on the heads of groups. Small, white flowers grow on the plant. They are usually grouped together by 2-6 in a cluster. Their blossoms appear between August and December. A round, brown, flat capsule follows the fertile flower. The apex contains two seeds, each one attached to a cell opening. It is about 2 cm in diameter.

The plant originally belongs to South Asian and Southeast Asian regions, and it grows in places like Jammu and Kashmir, Nepal, Assam, East Bengal, Tripura, and South Godavari. Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, and Pakistan are also places where this plant grows.

What are the Medicinal Qualities of Parijat/Night Jasmine?

There are many health benefits associated with Parijat in Ayurveda. In Indian mythology and folklore, Parijat is generally revered. Night jasmine plants and flowers are mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita and Harivamsa Purana. The Parijat tree is said to be a paradise in Indian mythology. Night jasmine trees bloom only at night and all their flowers fall to the ground till the morning. Night jasmine is sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Night".  The flowers on the tree are incredibly fragmented.

Because of its health-beneficial properties, the whole Parijat tree is used for medicinal purposes, and the seeds are used for Piles treatment. Gout is treated by using a decoction of flowers and leaves. The juice of leaves is also used in the treatment of dry cough. You can extract the juice from the Harsingar leaves, which contain worms, for children who get worms in their stomachs frequently. To make the juice extract more effective, mix 1 teaspoon of the extract with some mishri/honey and let your child drink it on an empty stomach in the morning.
