World No Tobacco Day or Anti-Tobacco Day: What are the Key Messages?
- Quit Tobacco to Save Our Planet:
Every cigarette or tobacco product smoked wastes valuable resources on which our survival is predicated. For your own health and the welfare of our world, give up cigarettes. Tobacco smoking comprises three types of greenhouse gases, contributing to increased air pollution. - Help Tobacco Farmers to Switch to Sustainable Crops:
To lessen the environmental impact of tobacco cultivation, curing, and manufacturing, governments and policymakers should encourage tobacco farmers in switching to alternate, more sustainable livelihoods while continuing to pursue tobacco control measures. - Tobacco Harms the Environment:
Tobacco production, usage, and waste pollute our water, land, beaches, and city streets with chemicals, hazardous waste, cigarette butts, containing microplastics, and e-cigarette waste. Don't be fooled by the tobacco industry's attempt to divert attention away from its environmental damages by greenwashing its products with payments to sustainability initiatives and reporting on environmental "standards" they frequently set for themselves. - Make the Tobacco Industry Clean up the Mess:
The tobacco industry profits from the degradation of the environment, and it must be held accountable for this harm and made to pay for the waste and damages, including the costs of collection.
