Hockey is played between two teams like other sports along with the use of a ball and hockey sticks. There are many types of hockey such as bandy, field hockey, ice hockey, rink hockey, street hockey, roller hockey, which are played all over the world. Whenever the term hockey is used in general it stands for field hockey, but in some countries such as the United States, Canada, Russia, Eastern and Northern Europe, the term hockey refers to ice hockey.
In India, we mostly play Field Hockey. Field Hockey used to be India’s National Sport. Previously Hockey and its related work were handled Indian Hockey Federation (1925-2008) but in 2008 Indian Hockey Federation was dissolved and a new Governing Body named Hockey India came into existence on May 20, 2009, to direct and conduct all the activities for Men and Women’s Hockey in India. Hockey India is recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. Hockey India is affiliated with the Indian Olympics Association (IOA), the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Asian Hockey Federation (AHF). Hockey India trains players at sub-junior, junior and senior-level with the help of the Sports Ministry. The Hockey India logo resembles Ashok Chakra but in the place of lines, there are hockey sticks. This logo was launched on 24th July 2009.
India has produced many hockey legends over the year but from 1927 to 1956 was the golden period of Indian Hockey. In this time period, Indian Hockey won many Olympics and other medals.
