What is Mewar Mahotsav/ Mewar Festival 2023 and Why Mewar Festival is Celebrated?

Udaipur celebrates the Mewar festival to welcome the spring season. However, the festival is celebrated throughout the state, and the true flavor of the carnival can be experienced in Udaipur because it was once under Mewar rule.

The whole city will be decorated, especially the local markets, which will be adorned with bright lights and colorful decorative elements. Since it happens to coincide with the Gangaur festival, the Mewar festival is equally as important to the town's women.
When is Mewar Mahotsav 2023?

This year Mewar Mahotsav will be celebrated from March 24th to 26th. Visiting Udaipur during the Mewar festival is a strongly recommended experience for experiencing the color and joy that fills the people of Rajasthan. The celebration takes place to celebrate spring's arrival.

The Gangaur festival, which celebrates Mewar's pride and folk culture besides Rajasthan's culture, is right around the corner. In some ways, this tradition is a living legacy. The sixteen-day worship of Gangaur began on the day after Holi. Every house is simultaneously performing Gangaur puja. The tourism department, in collaborative efforts with the district administration, organizes the Mewar Festival each year to celebrate this folk culture. This year's event will take place from March 24 to 26.

The colors of this living heritage will also be made visible to G-20 delegates. The G-20 meeting will be held in the city from March 21 to March 23. In such a case, the tourism department will encourage delegates to attend the Mewar festival. They will be able to witness this historic festival as well.
History of Mewar Mahotsav/ Mewar Festival:

The Mewar Festival is unique in that it describes religious and social beliefs, as well as Mewari tradition and culture. Mewar Festival began in 1979. The Tourism Department began organizing this festival to promote Gangaur Festival and tourism.

The Mewar Festival first took place in the City Palace's Manak Chowk courtyard. Members of the Mewar royal family, foreign guests, and common people attended this 1979 ceremony. The department began cultural programs and competitions at the time.
How Mewar Mahotsav/ Mewar Festival is Celebrated?

The festivities begin with the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's idols. A "procession" is organized where the participants cross through various areas of the town with the idols of Shiva-Parvati and move ahead towards the Gangaur Ghat at Lake Pichola.

The idols are immersed in holy water, and people pray for the prosperity of their families. Following the rituals, folk dances are performed, and many other cultural programs are organized.

Places to Visit in Udaipur During Mewar Mahotsav 2023:

Pratap Memorial (Moti Magri): A large bronze statue of Maharana Pratap riding his favorite horse Chetak stands atop the Moti Magri, viewing Fateh Sagar. Locals climb the hill to pay their respects to Rana Pratap and his fiercely loyal horse 'Chetak,' who was loyal and protective of its master and remained by his side until the end. While transporting his master to safety from the battlefield of Haldighati, this devoted steed gave his life.

The City Palace: It is a magnificent architectural marvel that towers over the lake on a hill surrounded by crenelated walls and consists of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms, and hanging gardens. The main entrance is through a triple-arched gate known as the "Tripolia," which has eight marble porticos. The Maharanas were weighed in gold under the gate, and the corresponding amount was distributed among the populace.

Lake Palace: Originally known as Jagniwas, it functioned as a summer palace. The palace, which faces east and was built between 1743 and 1746 on the island near Jagmandir in Lake Pichola, is a magnificent piece of architecture. Semi-precious stones and ornamented niches adorn the walls of black and white marble. Its courtyards are adorned with gardens, fountains, pillared terraces, and columns.

Ahar Museum: The Ahar Museum is located near an amazing cluster of Maharana of Mewar cenotaphs. The museum houses a small but significant collection of earthen pottery. There are also sculptures and archaeological discoveries dating all the way back to 1700 BC. A special attraction here is the metal figure of Buddha from the 10th century.

Lake Pichola: The lake was named after the village of Picholi. This lake contains the islands of Jagniwas and Jagmandir. The City Palace can be found on the lake's eastern shore. A sunset boat ride on the lake provides a spectacular view of the Lake and City Palace.

Fateh Sagar Lake: Located to the north of Lake Pichola, this lovely lake is surrounded by hills and woods. This man-made lake is linked to Lake Pichola via a canal. The lake houses the gorgeous Nehru Island in addition to an islet on which stands the Udaipur Solar Observatory. The Duke of Connaught dedicated it, and it was originally known as Connaught Bundh.

Bagore Ki Haveli: Bagore-ki-Haveli is located at Gangaur Ghat, near Lake Pichola. It was built in the 18th century by Mewar Prime Minister Amar Chand Badwa. Over a hundred rooms house costumes and modern art in the humongous palace. The interior glass and mirrors are designed in the traditional haveli look.
