Full Name and Date of Birth of Nelson Mandela:

  • The full name of Mandela was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Nelson Mandela was born in the village of Mvezo, in the Madiba clan. Nelson Mandela was also known as Madiba, His Xhosa Clan name.

Early Life and Education of Nelson Mandela:

  • Nelson Mandela’s father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela and his mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni. Nelson Mandela’s father was the principal councillor to the King Jongintaba Dalindyebo of the Thembu people. When Nelson Mandela was 12 years old his father died. After Nelson Mandela’s father’s death, he became ward at the Great Place in Mqhekezweni, of Jongintaba. He grew up by hearing the stories of the valour of his ancestors in the time of wars of resistance.
  • Nelson Mandela completed his primary schooling at Qunu. Here at Qunu one of his teachers named him Nelson. Nelson name was given as per a custom according to which all school children got Christian names.
  • After that Nelson Mandela completed Junior Certificate from Clarkebury Boarding Institute. Later Nelson Mandela completed his matriculation from Wesleyan secondary school.

  • In 1944 Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress and he helped to form ANC Youth League.
  • Nelson Mandela became the National Volunteer-in-Chief of the Defiance Campaign in 1952 and Maulvi Cachila became his deputy. The South African Congress and ANC both combinedly started the campaign of Civil Disobedience against the Six Unjust Laws. Nelson Mandela ad his 19 ANC members were charged due to the campaign under the Suppression of Communism Act and got sentenced to nine months of hard labour and suspended for two years.
  • In August 1953 Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo started South Africa’s first-ever Black law firm named “Mandela & Tambo”.
  • On June 26th 1955 the Freedom Charter was adopted due to this Nelson Mandela was only allowed the watch in secret.

Treason Trial & Arms Resistance Movement and Nelson Mandela:

  • On December 5th 1956 Nelson Mandela got arrested and after that, a treason trial was started on him. Nelson Mandela along with 28 others acquitted on March 29th 1961. After that Nelson Mandela underground himself for the preparation of the National strike on 29, 30 & 31 March.
  • In a Protest in Sharpeville on March 21st 1961 against the passed laws, police killed 69 unarmed people. The Pan Africanist Congress and ANC got banned.
  • Nelson Mandela got married again to a social worker named Winnie Madikizela on June 14th 1958 and later got divorced in 1996.
  • Nelson Mandela using the fake name David Motasamayi Mandela flew away from South Africa on January 11th 1962. Later in August 1962 he got arrested later convicted and sentenced for the 5years.
  • Nelson Mandela along with 10 others was on trial mostly known as Rivonia Trial. During the hearing, his words from his Speech were immortalized.

In 2001 Nelson Mandela got treated for prostate cancer. In the later years of his life, Nelson Mandela had become weaker due to this he reduces the number of public appearances. On December 5th,2013 due to a recurring lung infection Nelson Mandela took his last breath.

The United Nations had declared 18th July as “Nelson Mandela International Day” in 2009. This day is celebrated for the contributions to democracy, freedom, peace and human rights in South Africa as well as around the world by Nelson Mandela.

  • In 1990 India awarded Nelson Mandela “Bharat Ratan”. India’s highest civilian honour.

  • In 2015 UN General Assembly changed the name of Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners to “The Mandela Rules” to honour Nelson Mandela legacy.
