What is Social Media?

Social-Media Social media refer to interactive digital channels that enable the creation and dissemination of information, ideas, interests, and other expressions through virtual communities and networks. The vast variety of stand-alone and integrated social media services currently available makes it difficult to define social media, but some common characteristics do exist:

Web 2.0 Internet-based programs that are interactive are referred to as social media. The lifeblood of social media is user-produced material, such as written posts or comments, digital images or videos, and data generated through all online interactions. Users build service-specific accounts for the social media company's website or app, which the company designs and maintains.

By integrating a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups, social media aids the growth of online social networks. In the context of media, the term "social" implies that platforms are user-centric and facilitate social interaction. As a result, social media can be considered as online facilitators or enhancers of human networks—interconnected webs of people. Social media, according to Merriam-Webster, is "a form of electronic communication (such as social networking, microblogging, etc.) in which users exchange information, ideas, personal messages, and other material (such as videos)."
