Why Bird Festival in Udaipur is Celebrated?

According to RK Singh, Chief Conservator of Forests, the Udaipur Bird Festival, which has been held for the past eight years to raise public awareness about environmental and bird conservation, is a one-of-a-kind event not just in Rajasthan but throughout the country.

The Udaipur Bird Festival has activities that cater to a wide range of interest levels and has thus been conceptualized with the goal of bringing together professionals from academia, field experts, and sector to convey attributes of wildlife and biodiversity conservation to the general public, not only for education or amusement, but instead to groom them as environment lovers through the exchange and sharing of experiences, ideas, and knowledge.

Bird Festival is also celebrated to create actions to decrease the environmental impact of climate change and bringing bird conservation front and center draws the awareness of nature lovers and the broader population to the importance of birds and the crucial contribution they make in the ecosystem.
Bird Race at Udaipur Bird Festival 2023:

The Bird Festival will also feature a bird race. Various teams will be established, and that each team will be assigned a 40-kilometer region. The group will go to these locations and tally the birds collectively. Following the visit, it will be determined whose team counted the most birds. That team will be crowned the winner. Why do We Need to Save Birds?

Birds' flying adaptations include wings, strong muscles, hollow bones, and, most notably, feathers. Some animals, including ostriches, penguins, and kakapos, have lost their ability to fly. Eggs are laid by all birds to reproduce. One-quarter of the world's 10,000 bird species are on the verge of extinction. Here are some reasons why we should save birds –
  • Birds are the most sensitive to climate change. Their behavior and absence can help us assess environmental threats. Humans are incapable of accomplishing this.
  • The presence of birds reduces insect outbreaks. This is true for maintaining insect populations in forests and urban habitats.
  • Some birds play a vital role in pollination. Several plants would not grow until birds pollinate them. Humans are unable to plant all trees.
  • Birds are excellent ambassadors for environmental protection and awareness, both as a species and in the environments, they share with other flora and wildlife.
