Performance Appraisal

Performance Appraisal is a way to evaluate the performance of an employee and it is also edited as a complete process document. Performance Appraisal is done on a regular basis, there is a regular review of employee performance in an organization in Performance Appraisal. Performance Appraisal is also known as a performance review, employee evaluation. Generally, its performance is evaluated by the staff's manager.

Performance Appraisal Definition is given by Edwin B Flippo - "Performance Appraisal is a systematic, periodic and so far as humanly possible, an impartial rating of an employee's excellence in matters pertaining to his present job and to his potentialities for a better job."

Performance Appraisal Definition is given by Scott, Clothier, and Spriegal - "Performance Appraisal is a record of progress for apprentices and regular employees as a guide in making promotions, transfer or demotions, as a guide in making lists for bonus distribution, for seniority consideration and for rates of pay, as an instrument for discovering hidden genius and as a source of information that makes conferences with employees helpful."

Generally, performance Appraisal is done on an annual basis, but nowadays many companies are evaluating 2 more performances in one year. Performance Appraisal is a correct way to reach the performance of individual employees. Through the performance Appraisal, productivity, behavior, achievements, strengths, weaknesses, possibility for future, and many more aspects of any employee are evaluated. Objective production, personnel, and judicial evaluation have three main methods to be used by companies or employers to evaluate any employee.

To find out the value of a job in an organization company a systematic process is created which is known as Job Evaluation. The main purpose of Job Evaluation is to establish a pay structure without discrimination the jobs within the organization.  Every Job Evaluation takes place with Job Analysis so that the fundamental information about the job can be collected to achieve Pay equality between various job roles and positions.

Job evaluation definition as per Wendell French - “a process of determining the relative worth of the various jobs within the organization so that differential wages may be paid to jobs of different worth”.

Job evaluation definition as per Kimball and Kimball - “as an effort to determine the relative value of every job in a plant to determine what the fair basic wage for such a job should be.”

Performance Appraisal and Job Evaluation these two terms can be mistaken as the same but these two terms are not the same.

Difference between Performance Appraisal and Job Evaluation

  • Performance Appraisal is an analysis of a Job Holder, not the job whereas Job Evaluation is an analysis of the job, not the job holder.
  • Performance Appraisal is done for pay, transfer, promotion, or demotion, etc purpose whereas Job Evaluation is done for finding the value/worth of the job.
  • Performance Appraisal is kind of a mandatory process and it is done for all the employees whereas Job Evaluation is not a compulsory process.
  • Performance Appraisal is carried out by managers, superiors whereas Job Evaluation is carried out by a committee.
  • Performance Appraisal is done after a person is hired whereas Job Evaluation is done before the hiring
  • In a Performance Appraisal, a job holder is evaluated on the basis of their performance in a particular time period whereas, in Job Evaluation responsibility, experience, working conditions, qualifications, etc factors are evaluated to perform the job.
